Most people probably don't realise it, but 'As Time Goes By' appeared over a decade before it was used in Casablanca. In fact, it has an introductory bit that is rarely recorded on cover versions. A quiz question I like is to quote it, then ask for the next words. You can even prompt the clueless by saying ingenuously 'you must remember this' -- which is of course the answer -- and people still don't get it.

I have seen it, but by then that music had other associations for me. Such as? I tend to associate it with bad music, personally.

The first time I heard it, I was 12 or 13, and there was a presenter on the radio who used it as a theme tune.
I was struck by it. Well, that's what it's for, of course. I can't remember how I found out what it was -- maybe I asked my mother, because at some point I found out that she hated Wagner. Except for Die Meistersinger.
I knew nothing about Wagner, but was beginning to meet people who were obsessive about the music, so I borrowed an opera from the library. Maybe two. It's all a haze. It didn't live up to the promise of the hook; it went on and on and on, and the plot was opaque even by operatic standards. I went into a coma several months into the first one. I'm pretty sure I never finished listening to it. I have come to terms with Wagner since, though it took a long time, and I'm not sure I'll ever see another opera; I saw Tristan und Isolde in Leipzig once. But I might.

I try to include as many classics in my to-watch list as I can, but the bits I've seen or heard about Casablanca have left me indifferent. On the other hand, I've been wrong about this kind of things many times. Not that I would watch it in the near future; I'm mostly watching stuff in the chronological order they were made and I'm currently in 1919.

Casablanca is probably very dated, technically. But it still works. The extracts that you may have seen probably look cheesier out of context.

The humour may be underrated.

Casablanca is probably very dated It should be fine. The humour may be underrated. Okay, it might be worth a watch.

Of course, classics don't become classics for nothing. Film critics seem to be reliable in terms of compatibility with my tastes, which I wouldn't necessarily say about music critics for instance.

Again hijacking this thread to talk about a related subject, namely original movie soundtracks that I like. There aren't that many, so they're worth noting. Here's the Shire theme from the Lord of the Rings:
The LOTR soundtrack is a bit special to me in that it's the only one I've bought. I was so obsessed with the Fellowship of the Ring after I saw it at the theater that when I stumbled upon the CD in Portugal, I immediately bought it, even though I barely remembered the soundtrack. I didn't regret it though, and listened to that CD a lot. In particular, the Shire theme, that I thought managed to transcribe the spirit of the Shire very well. Light-hearted and homely.
Another one I like is Lament for Gandalf, with that subtle oriental touch that I thought worked well as Elvish music.

But Gandalf came back from the dead because he was an Atari!

Shh, you're spoiling it!!
That said, a pedant would remind you that he's an Istar. Although the pedant in question might be missing something.

I thought it might have something to do with the computers but wasn't sure!
