(by the way, another thing I meant by "soundalikes" was e.g. two people whose voices sound alike; this would be more appropriate in this thread than the musical discussions)

Maybe it's a well-known fact, but it wasn't by me. Nor to me. Annoyingly. Obvious now.

What might have been a defence was that Yablokoff himself nicked it from Dvořák. Again, I suspect unconsciously, or Yablokoff wouldn't have sued. And yes, there are always those who say that there are a limited number of notes, and melodies will repeat. Well, yes, but. I don't have a clear-cut opinion on the question of inspiration/plagiarism of classical music (in the broad sense of the term). For instance, one of France's most acclaimed singer-songwriters, Serge Gainsbourg, often borrowed from classical composers, which I'm uncomfortable with. While he was open about it, I thought that contrary to the popular saying, a fault confessed wasn't necessarily half redressed, and the age of the piece you borrowed from was irrelevant. On the other hand, well, you can't make music without borrowing one way or another. And you could argue that age is relevant: classical music is not only the product, but also the matrix of the Western musical tradition, and famous pieces can be seen as building blocks that one can reuse at will. Also, direct borrowings are the basis of hip-hop beats, and I'm fine with that (although samples are usually very short, and the essence of the original piece is often lost in the sampling process). Later on LD, I mentioned that I'd missed out 'Look Back in Anger', where it isn't as obvious. So, two borrowings in one song, considering the intro is a complete rip-off of Lennon's "Imagine". Although now I wonder if you're the one who'd called my attention to that fact. I know I hadn't noticed it myself anyway.
