Hm... Tacitus?

That's an interesting guess, but no. I'm glad it isn't too obvious.

The last three words are from the same sentence, I think. (That was one of the sentences that stuck with me)

Apuleius?
Going random as I truly have no idea.

Apuleius? Going random as I truly have no idea. That's a really good guess as well, and in one or more ways, it gets closer to the actual text and to the actual author. However, it is not Apuleius.

Ok, time for stronger hints ... Tbh, I thought at least one word in there would kind of give it away ... or maybe the last few words. As I said, the last 3 words come from the same sentence fragment. Take a last guess as to what it could have been before I give it away. <...> factumque est cor eius focus ardens, cui manum imposuit numquam sublatura. Even stronger hint that totally gives it away: Vae temerario qui ea scire cupit quae oportet eum ignorare et ea suscipere quae potestatem eius excedunt.

Well done!
Which one of the hints did it for you?

The last one. Maybe I could have recognized the quote before that if I'd paused to think but I didn't.

That sounds like prose and it sounds like an historian.

It is prose but not a historian.

The furor feels weird ... if it weren't for that word, I would have guessed it's de re publica.
I suppose I'll go with that guess, anyway.
