So easy with the right questions. And yet if anyone had asked if he had been a film actor or director, I could have said yes, and you might have not immediately asked if that was what he was best known for, and been led down completely the wrong path.

Yes, but you knew that already. I didn't know, only suspected. Jacques Brel isn't the only dead male Francophone singer born in Belgium—he's just probably the best known one internationally.

I'm sure there are throngs of Belgian singers, but I've just looked at a list of Belgian best-selling musical artists (not just singers) since 1940, and there are only three that I think the average anglophone would have heard of: Brel, Plastic Bertrand and Django Reinhardt. Plastic Bertrand is alive (and didn't actually sing), and Reinhardt wasn't a vocalist.
