And, yes, you, Etaoin, were being addressed—who else?

And I can't go back and italicise Hudibras without being recorded as having edited, so I won't. I'm not even sure if it should be italicised. The modern convention most widely observed is to italicise the title of a novel, while the title of a poem or short story goes in quotation marks. But Hudibras, like Paradise Lost, is very long, so generally gets italicised.

As far as short, self-contained pieces go, depending on how short you mean, I guess candidates could be Martial's epigrams or even Publilius Syrus's proverbs. Or did you rather have short stories in mind (e.g. Poe)?

I wasn't sure whether you meant things that fit in a single post or just relatively short things.
I'm tempted by Publilius Syrus.

But I didn't know the story of the story.

I don't know the full story of the science fiction equivalent: The last man on Earth sat alone in a room. There was a knock on the door. Fredric Brown used that as an opening for a 1948 short story. The Wiki account is unclear; it's recognised that the first two sentences could in theory stand alone, but was this something Brown picked up and ran with, or were those lines only famous after the story was written?

I wasn't sure whether you meant things that fit in a single post or just relatively short things. I'm tempted by Publilius Syrus. So right now there is one vote for Shakespeare (Julius Caesar would probably be my default choice), one vote for no literature, and one for short things that fit in a single post (my default choice would be Publilius Syrus). If no one else chimes in, I'll just make a choice among these myself.
