The children left for school, and the old lady to call on Mrs. Harper and vanquish her realism with Tom's marvelous dream. Sid had better judgment than to utter the thought that was in his mind as he left the house. It was this: "Pretty thin—as long a dream as that, without any mistakes in it!" What a hero Tom was become, now! He did not go skipping and prancing, but moved with a dignified swagger as became a pirate who felt that the public eye was on him. And indeed it was; he tried not to seem to see the looks or hear the remarks as he passed along, but they were food and drink to him. Smaller boys than himself flocked at his heels, as proud to be seen with him, and tolerated by him, as if he had been the drummer at the head of a procession or the elephant leading a menagerie into town. Boys of his own size pretended not to know he had been away at all; but they were consuming with envy, nevertheless. They would have given anything to have that swarthy sun-tanned skin of his, and his glittering notoriety; and Tom would not have parted with either for a circus. At school the children made so much of him and of Joe, and delivered such eloquent admiration from their eyes, that the two heroes were not long in becoming insufferably "stuck-up." They began to tell their adventures to hungry listeners—but they only began; it was not a thing likely to have an end, with imaginations like theirs to furnish material. And finally, when they got out their pipes and went serenely puffing around, the very summit of glory was reached.

[A star is seen at the darker end of the gallery; it is stationary; and a voice is heard singing]
FIRST SPIRIT Mortal! to thy bidding bow'd, From my _______ in the cloud, Which the breath of twilight builds, And the summer's sun-set _______ With the azure and vermilion, Which is mix'd for my pavilion; Though thy quest may be _______, On a star-beam I have _______; To thine adjuration bow'd, Mortal -- be thy wish avow'd!
Voice of the SECOND SPIRIT Mont Blanc is the monarch of mountains, They crowned him long ago On a throne of rocks, in a robe of clouds, With a _______ of _______. Around his waist are forests braced, The _______ in his hand; But ere it fall, that thundering ball Must pause for my _______. The Glacier's cold and restless mass Moves onward day by day; But I am he who bids it _______, Or with its ice _______. I am the spirit of the place, Could make the mountain _______ And quiver to his cavern'd base-- And what with me wouldst Thou?

[A star is seen at the darker end of the gallery; it is stationary; and a voice is heard singing]
FIRST SPIRIT Mortal! to thy bidding bow'd, From my castle/palace in the cloud, Which the breath of twilight builds, And the summer's sun-set gilds With the azure and vermilion, Which is mix'd for my pavilion; Though thy quest may be foolsome, On a star-beam I have come; To thine adjuration bow'd, Mortal -- be thy wish avow'd!
Voice of the SECOND SPIRIT Mont Blanc is the monarch of mountains, They crowned him long ago On a throne of rocks, in a robe of clouds, With a crown/sceptre of fog/spruce. Around his waist are forests braced, The sceptre/trees in his hand; But ere it fall, that thundering ball Must pause for my _______. The Glacier's cold and restless mass Moves onward day by day; But I am he who bids it stop, Or with its ice _______. I am the spirit of the place, Could make the mountain move And quiver to his cavern'd base-- And what with me wouldst Thou?

Though thy quest may be foolsome, On a star-beam I have come; Counting on the fact that what doesn't rhyme in today's English might have rhymed in older stages of the language.

They rhyme as closely as they can, assuming the first blank is a trochee, surely?

I think in AE the suffix -some is pronounced with a schwa, as opposed to the word "some" (or "come") that has the "sum" vowel.

I would've thought it was the same in all English varieties actually.

Sure, but won't that be the case with any possible trochaic word?

For "foolsome" to rhyme with "come", "foolsome" would have to be stressed on the second syllable, and I don't *think* that was possible even back then.

These guesses are close, relatively close, or on the right general track: This one is fairly close to the next blank:

'Travelled'? For where 'come' was guessed?
Although the only rhyme I can think of is 'unravelled', which is unlikely.

Sure, but won't that be the case with any possible trochaic word? Sorry, I misunderstood your point; I thought you were saying they did rhyme.

'Travelled'? For where 'come' was guessed? No, but I would say that "travelled" is somewhat closer than "come".

[A star is seen at the darker end of the gallery; it is stationary; and a voice is heard singing]
FIRST SPIRIT Mortal! to thy bidding bow'd, From my dwelling/haven/shelter in the cloud, Which the breath of twilight builds, And the summer's sun-set gilds With the azure and vermilion, Which is mix'd for my pavilion; Though thy quest may be forbidden, On a star-beam I have ridden; To thine adjuration bow'd, Mortal -- be thy wish avow'd!
Voice of the SECOND SPIRIT Mont Blanc is the monarch of mountains, They crowned him long ago On a throne of rocks, in a robe of clouds, With a coronet/tiara/ring (that probably should be an iamb but oh well) of mist/snow. Around his waist are forests braced, The _______ in his hand; But ere it fall, that thundering ball Must pause for my command/assent/consent. The Glacier's cold and restless mass Moves onward day by day; But I am he who bids it quiet/still, Or with its ice _______. I am the spirit of the place, Could make the mountain shake And quiver to his cavern'd base-- And what with me wouldst Thou?
