Also, Shakespeare and the Bible are what's given to players of DID, but I'm pretty sure their third choice of book doesn't have to be Byron.

What's wrong with anapestic/amphibrachic dimeter?

The verses I quoted are a parody of what was presumably a seriously intended folk song:
On top of old Smokey all covered with snow I lost my true lover by courting too slow. Oh, courting's a pleasure, parting is grief And a false hearted lover is worse than a thief.
(But a thief he will just rob you And take what you say But a false hearted lover Will send you to your grave.)
He'll hug you and kiss you and tell you more lies Than the crossties on the railroad or the stars in the skies Your grave will decay you and turn you to dust Not one boy in ten thousand a poor girl can trust.
For whatever idiosyncratic reason, it now seems comical. Hence the parodies.

As I said before, I've kind of had enough of Poe, but I could still return to him if no other stuff that I can think of is tolerated. Kizolk at least seems to like his short stories. But... I'm not so sure about you. You've got mixed feelings, IIRC.

I don't know if anyone not brought up in the States, and maybe Canada, will be familiar with either the original or the parody. But I suspect that most people who are aware of it will know one or another parody better than the original. Sadly, we don't have enough leftpondian active members to get more input.

Voice of the THIRD SPIRIT In the blue depth of the waters, Where the wave hath no strife, Where the wind is a _______, And the sea-snake hath life, Where the Mermaid is decking Her green hair with shells; Like the tremors (again probably doesn't scan but I can't think of anything that's connected to thunder without having to do with sound) on the surface Came the sound of thy spells; O'er my calm Hall of Coral The deep echo roll'd-- To the Spirit of Ocean Thy wishes unfold!
FOURTH SPIRIT Where the slumbering earthquake Lies dreaming on fire, And the lakes of bitumen Rise _______ higher; Where the roots of the Andes Strike deep in the earth, As their summits to heaven Shoot soaringly forth; I have quitted my birth-place, Thy bidding to bide-- Thy _______ hath subdued me, Thy will be my guide!
FIFTH SPIRIT I am the Rider of the wind, The Stirrer of the storm; The hurricane I left behind Is yet with lightning warm; To speed to thee, o'er shore and sea I swept upon the blast: The _______ I met _______ well, and yet 'Twill landfall ere night be past.

You've got mixed feelings, IIRC. The main thing I like is variety. I may be alone in this. Poe is one of those writers who appeal to foreigners far more than to native speakers, as I'm sure I've said. Now I like his poetry to the extent of being able to quote a fair amount of it, but the faults that I can see, but somehow justify, in his poetry. are impossible to ignore in his prose. This may be idiosyncratic. I'm not sure if I've ever read a complete prose word of Poe's, so maybe I should try anew after what must be decades. Anyway, my views don't count.

For what it's worth, I prefer this over pretty much every Shakespeare we've had in this game. I still prefer Poe though, but it'd be nicer to have passages/authors everyone likes. I don't know if anyone not brought up in the States, and maybe Canada, will be familiar with either the original or the parody. It didn't ring the faintest bell.

tremors (again probably doesn't scan but I can't think of anything that's connected to thunder without having to do with sound) The "not to do with sound" hint was about "Where the wind is a _______". This blank isn't specifically to do with sound either, but sound is one of the elements involved in the phenomenon.

Re variety: I understand, but after a while it becomes hard to come up with new ideas, hence the latest tendency to post whole plays or novels bit by bit... Re Poe: I adore his poetry. I like his prose to some extent, but using it in this game has caused me to look at it closer and notice how wordy it can be... with too much gratuitous use of complicated words.

I like his prose to some extent I still love "Silence". But it's very poetic prose... Nowadays you could have split it into lines and called it free verse.

I like Poe's short stories not because of his style, but because of the stories. If I want style, I read French authors
