Constantine
Maybe it sounds like an adjective to me only because of Byzantine, but I'll try it nonetheless.

This building is something more dignified than a lavatory, let alone a lupanar.

The name/adjective refers to a physical characteristic.

Claudius isn't an adjective, as far as I know, although claudus is. Technically, Claudius is an adjective ( Claudius/Claudia/Claudium = belonging to the gens Claudia). But I wasn't talking about that kind of adjective.

Constantine Maybe it sounds like an adjective to me only because of Byzantine, but I'll try it nonetheless. Well, in its Latin form and originally, it was a kind of adjective (meaning something like "belonging to Constans"). The right name's spelling isn't Anglicized.

I could declare the puzzle solved since the location has been found at least. Though that answers the question "where on earth", not "what on earth".

Maybe I'll just wait for the function of the building to be found, unless everyone has had enough.

Library? Although the Romans would have used the Greek word, wouldn't they? Let alone others.

Yes, it's the Library of Celsus.

C______ (name of the guy who had it built I was wrong here. Celsus is the name of the person in memory of whom it was built. His son had it built.

I can't remember whether I've posted this before, or where it was if I did. If nobody else remembers, this might encourage some interesting guesses. The what is more important than the precise where, which would be much harder.
