.A game where we post pictures of objects, landmarks, people, etc. and people have to guess what/who/where it is on earth. Initially I just wanted to post a pic of some monument on the ET thread, and ask if I was the only one who didn't know about it, but I figured that's a game I'd like, partly because of GeoGuessr. Anyway, do you know what this is? (reminder in case you want to post a pic: taking a screenshot, clicking "import images" and Ctrl+V works!)

(no "it's your turn if you win" kind of rule; post if you want to post, that's it)

It's the Heddal Stave Church in Norway, built entirely out of wood in the 13th and restored in the 20th century. Downright magnificent. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heddal_Stave_Church#Pacifica kinda posted a hint on the ET thread yesterday, but I'm not sure if the noticed it: the association between black metal and church burnings is due to a wave of Norwegian stave church burnings by black metal musicians in the 1990's. The Norwegian black metal scene mainly consisted of a bunch of self-serious assholes, but thankfully things have evolved since then. You don't even have to pretend you're a Satanist to make black metal these days!

I'd never heard of it. I don't suppose guessing that it was a church would have garnered any points, given the hints supplied by the crosses and the gravestones.

I don't suppose guessing that it was a church would have garnered any points Indeed but it would have earned you a pat on the back. I would have preferred it if those visual hints weren't there, but I thought the general look of the building was confusing enough that the crosses could have been mistaken for random architectural elements that happened to be cross-shaped.

I've seen that before somewhere. I knew it was somewhere up north but couldn't say exactly where. What's weird about it for me, is that it was built as a Catholic church, but looks like a western interpretation of the old wooden churches of Orthodox Russia.

Pacifica kinda posted a hint on the ET thread yesterday, but I'm not sure if the noticed it I only saw this thread now, and I didn't know about the stave-church burnings! Wow! If I'd seen the picture in time, I could have told you with certainty that it was a church in Scandinavia, for I've seen pictures of it before, but I would have had to take a guess at the exact country as I didn't remember that.

I don't think I've ever seen it but I could be wrong.
I'm bad at art and architecture styles, but one thing I can say is that the columns of the ground floor look like Ionic; now I don't know if they're associated to a particular period or place, and it could simply be an influence anyway. As for the function of the building, knowing what the statues (which look at least vaguely Greco-Roman) are would help, but it seems relatively modest in size which might be a clue. And as previously established, palm trees can be found just about everywhere so they probably can't help, but I'd tend to associate them with the Mediterranean.
Anyway, I'll try a private palace on a Greek island.

No. But you aren't too far off culturally and geographically.

An alternative theory would be that there's a trap, like a slightly unexpected location e.g. in the Levant.

It seems that this place is indeed sometimes included in "the Levant" though that isn't the most usual classification.

All right... let's hybridize this game. Fill in the blanks:
The L______ of C______ in E______, p______-d______ T______.

Everything can be advantageously FitB'ed up.
p_____-d_____ looks like a variant of "modern-day"... Or maybe not a variant, but the opposite: I don't think I've ever seen "past-day" but maybe it's in use!
But maybe E is Egypt or T is Turkey. I don't know which one has a stronger claim at being classified as part of the Levant.
