Can anyone think of any film or game (or possibly book) that received a sequel which was even better than its original?
There are a lot of films or games that are just perfect the way they are, and they should simply be left untouched so as not to damage their legacy. Unfortunately, a lot of companies simply see such successes a money cows and are trying to milk a franchise until it runs completely dry ... that's how you end up with gems like the latest Matrix sequel or the latest Star Wars trilogy.
There are two cases I can think of where a sequel was actually better than the pilot ... but I wonder if others can think of other examples.

Right now only one comes to mind: Home Alone 2 Man I had that movie on eternal replay when I was a kid.
What I don't like about most sequels is the unplanned feeling to them. Most of the time you can see they weren't part of the original vision. So I don't bother watching them for the most part (haven't seen the Matrix ones and am not particularly planning on doing it).
I'm sure other ones will come to mind at some point. What are the ones you're thinking of?

Ha, I thought you'd say the Godfather! I had opened a similar thread to this one somewhere else and Etaoin Shrdlu suggested that film to me. It was quite amazing ... the first film was already a rather decent film in and of itself, but they really managed to come up with something even better in the sequel. Normally, a lot of sequels are just a reboot of the original with better graphics and some other minor improvements thrown in, but nothing as fundamentally new as you experienced in the original part. In terms of computer games, maybe Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 qualify.

The fact that most of the time you can tell it wasn't part of the original vision (either because too much time passed, the author had a self-contained story in mind and didn't have anything to add, or written by other authors) spoils the fun in itself.
Sonic computer games? As in, recent ones?

In terms of games, in the oldie but goodie category: Secret of Mana/Seiken Densetsu II remains one of my favorite games ever, so I think it qualifies.

I'm talking about the good old Sonic 2 from the 90s ... which year was that? 94? Anyway, they introduced a fox with 2 tails ... that could fly. How much further can you advance a video game? In terms of games, in the oldie but goodie category: Secret of Mana/Seiken Densetsu II remains one of my favorite games ever, so I think it qualifies. That one passed me by, unfortunately. I liked it, but I really owe watching it to Etaoin Shrdlu's suggestion.

Ah, you were speaking German lol "Computer games" made it sound like you meant games you play on the PC, as opposed to Computerspiel = video games.

Ah, one came to mind: Indiana Jones III (Last Crusade). Probably my favorite of the first 3. The second one though is pretty bad.

I wonder if Godfather II is an exception because it was not entirely a sequel. The first film left out a lot of the book -- which is quite a good book -- and this was the right decision; there would have been no way of including it without making it longer than most people could endure, or at least enjoy. But it was important to the story, so putting it into the second film made sense. This reduced the amount of freelancing necessary to come up with new material to continue the story.
