Hm, not that easy to answer. All in all, I lean toward saying he is.

Are more than ten deaths described in all the stories involving him?

Are all or most of those people murdered?

Probably most.

Did you see this post? If it weren't for the novels, most of the answers could apply to Dr Watson, but none the Holmes stories are long enough to be novels. But I can't think of any other recurring characters.

I didn't :/ I have no better excuse than Etaoin's new avatar bear a chromatical resemblance to mine and I mistook her post for one of mine and ignored it...
It is Dr. Watson. Several Holmes stories are considered novels, including perhaps the most famous one, "The Hound of the Baskervilles".

Sherlock Holmes is like Shakespeare for me, just more so. In that I can't remember what I have actually read, and how much I've just absorbed from general culture and quizzes.

While I've read almost all of Shakespeare, I'm not sure I've actually read any Sherlock Holmes. It's possible I read some of it when I was very young (that would have been in translation) and don't really remember.

It's also quite possible that I came across some excerpts in the original more recently, but not any entire story.

I've read at least one story, possibly more but I can't say for sure.
The TV series I've watched a few months ago is more faithful to the original material contrary to what I thought, so I now know more about Sherlock Holmes than I did before. The only problem is that I can't tell what's canon and what's not.
