I did check his birthdate when I remembered where he was born. I'd have guessed the 1890s.

Damn. Big Brother came to mind a while ago but some things prevented me from guessing it. Notably, I wasn't sure whether describing him as a "character" was adequate.

He's a (probably) doubly fictional character, but a character nonetheless.
I expected difficulty in answering some questions. For example, "Is he human?" I would have replied "Yes/maybe/kind of. I don't know which answer is the least misleading."
But, as it turned out, the questions were pretty much all focused on the author, which made things easier (and maybe less fun).

He's a (probably) doubly fictional character, but a character nonetheless. That probably works. But the fact that at least some people in the world of that book don't think he exists and use the name to refer to a concept made me doubt. But, as it turned out, the questions were pretty much all focused on the author, which made things easier (and maybe less fun). I thought that maybe it would be more fun to leave some questions unanswered in certain circumstances. Focusing on the author felt a bit like cheating.

That's a bit problematic.
It did occur to me that the difficulty with the character might have been the point.

I thought that maybe it would be more fun to leave some questions unanswered in certain circumstances. If a player just happens to be asking the right questions to get there, whatever they are, it seems arbitrary and unfair to refuse to answer. Now maybe if you state before the game begins that such-and-such types of questions can't be asked, that would be acceptable. Focusing on the author felt a bit like cheating. I wouldn't say so.

By the way, this is the point at which I got the idea to use Big Brother next: Is this character involved in politics? Politics in the real world is and was in a bad way in many respects, but I don't think we've ever descended to the level of involving fictional characters. A politician could use a fictional character to push an agenda. Or an author could be making a political point through a character who isn't engaged in politics.
