I was listening to Radio 4's Broadcasting House, where they talk about this and that. The conversation turned to drugs and alcohol in light of Rupert Everett's statement that he regretted having been on heroin, and was considering giving up drinking. One of the guests said that she'd more or less given up alcohol, then added 'but I did crack last night for the first time in weeks'. I initially didn't realise she was using 'did' as an auxiliary verb, so was a bit surprised she was being so matter-of-fact about it.

I fell into the trap. In my defense, the lack of stress and emphasis in writing didn't help. Also, I'm not very familiar with that use of "crack". I knew you could say that someone "cracked under the pressure" and things like that, but here I think it's the slightly more specific sense of "yield to temptation", one that French "craquer" also has (e.g. "j'ai craqué pour une Porsche", which mayyybe you could translate as "I cracked and bought a Porsche", something I'm sure we've all said once in our lives). I understood it easily enough when I realized my first interpretation of the quote was wrong thanks to "craquer", but I have no recollection having ever seen it used in that particular way in English.

In his victory speech, he compared his party and supporters to Roman legions. He considers his party's victory to be that of "Rome" over "Moscow"—"Moscow" being the PTB/PVDA, the far-left party that was the N-VA's most serious opponent in this election and came in second with 20% against the N-VA's 37.

I missed the bit of history where Rome invaded Moscow. Or vice-versa.

I know nothing about the N-VA, but this kind of cheap showmanship seems to be specific to the populist right.

I kind of like it, actually. I mean this particular piece of showmanship, not the populist right in general.

To each their own! But this kind of thing usually comes with pretty unsavory ideas.

I rarely can resist a historical reference... and Latin.
But yes, unfortunately historical references in politics often come with unsavory ideas.

Back to work even though I'm still sick. At least I don't have a fever anymore, but it's annoying.
