If I started any of Sarah's evasion strategies, I would probably choose the disticha Catonis.

I just had the nightmarish vision of an ET thread where everyone only posted random quotes from different works.

It would actually be interesting. Like a conversation between mad people maybe, yes.

Well, I guess it could a concept for a thread, but not for one that to me does sound like it should be a conversation thread.

This isn't exactly a conversation thread. You can't expect everyone to have something to converse about every time they visit. This is a random thread, where there can be conversation, comments out of the blue, quotes, anything.

Why is it connoisseur in English and Connaisseur in German?
I remember misspelling that whenever I wrote it and always got the vowel wrong, but it's only now that I noticed that I knew it in 2 different variants from 2 languages.

I think Bitmap will like at least some of Syrus's quotes because they're misogynistic.

Why is it conn oisseur in English and Conn aisseur in German? I remember misspelling that whenever I wrote it and always got the vowel wrong, but it's only now that I noticed that I knew it in 2 different variants from 2 languages. It's a more Old French-y spelling. The only existing version in contemporary French is "connaisseur".

It looks like the word was borrowed at different times into each language. "Connoisseur" is the earlier form, "connaisseur" the modern one. Many (all?) ais were ois once upon a time.

I can imagine the French getting together and deciding to change the spelling, just to leave anglophones stuck with an orthography that was technically wrong.
I know language doesn't work that way. But I can't help the feeling that French might.
