Many (all?) ais were ois once upon a time. I'm sure there are exceptions, but yeah as a basic rule, it's not bad. It also indicates a rather interesting phonological evolution. Oi was originally pronounced something like "oy", which turned into "ouè" (which you can still find in some non-French Oïl languages), and ultimately "è". |

Something like "j'oi" for "j'ai" or "ploine" for "plaine" sounds too odd, so I don't think it was all ais, though what do I know.

I can imagine the French getting together and deciding to change the spelling, just to leave anglophones stuck with an orthography that was technically wrong. I know language doesn't work that way. But I can't help the feeling that French might. Maybe the spelling was just reformed in German at some point. |
