I didn't know pagers still existed. I had the same thought.

I also envisioned the possibility they did it through remote hacking, but it seems far-fetched. There were a number of cases of electronic cigarette batteries exploding (or were they "only" catching fire?) a few years back, but they were due to the batteries being damaged or improperly stored, and AFAIK the explosion couldn't be triggered by software.
Speaking of coding and vaping, I'm writing a script to calculate the amounts of each ingredient needed to make my vaping liquids. It's actually a bit annoying to do in your head, because you need to take into account the mass of nicotine you need for a given final volume, and the right proportions of flavorings and base liquid, as well as the composition of the base itself since it has an impact on the taste and other things. You can find such calculators on a variety of websites, but I wanted to make mine because it's fun, but also because I can ask it things other calculators don't do.

I had what I thought was one of the last pagers around the millennium. I had recently moved, and decided that a landline cost too much for the limited use I made of it -- if anyone really needed to call me, they could reach me at work. But then I started working nights. So I got a pager, or rather someone gave me a pager, because they were getting annoyed. If I got a phone call, I'd go to a public phone and call back. But are there public phones all over the place as there were back then, even in Lebanon? And would you feel happy trotting off to one if you were a Hezbollah operative in the current situation?

I've probably never seen one other than on a screen.

I actually wonder if they were that common in France. It always struck me as an American TV series thing. Then again I didn't hang out much with businessmen.

Doctors had them, before mobile phones. Didn't know anyone else who used them.

At this point I might be attempting to keep my distance from any device whatsoever, though that would be difficult to achieve.

Certainly, they should stop using any recently issued device at least. And ideally get rid of them as safely as possible. I'm actually a bit surprised they kept using the walkie-talkies after what happened yesterday.

Yeah, they don't seem to be particularly smart or cautious.

Gentlefolk, I'm heading off on holiday on Sunday and will be away till the last weekend of October. Alas, I won't be going to Vienna - crapped out of it - instead I'm just going to the vacant holiday cottages of a couple of friends in Ireland. In fact, the second house I'll be in belongs to the guy working in Vienna. The long and short of it is that I don't know if there'll be much of an internet connection down that way. It's very hilly, as in steeeep hills, the kind of hills that only permit the sun to be seen between 9am and 3pm! If you don't hear from me for a while after Sunday, you'll know why, and that my stinking corpse is unlikely to be feeding the vermin behind the front door.

Have a nice holiday! I'm just too used to internet being part of my life that it would suck to have no connection for an extended period of time, but I guess it's bearable if you have enough books with you and steep hills to look at.
